Marc Almond performs Marc and the Mambas' Torment and Toreros
9 August 2012
Having sold over 30 million records worldwide since the early 1980s, Marc Almond's influence continues to resonate today. He scored a huge platinum selling single with 'Tainted Love', a version of Gloria Jones' 1965 song which has been sampled and covered by contemporary artists such as Marilyn Manson and Rhianna .
For this special Meltdown show, Almond presents a rare live performance of Marc and The Mambas' groundbreaking 1983 release 'Torment and Toreros'. Joining the line-up is very special guest musician and Marc Almond collaborator, Jim Thirwell.
Due to public demand, extra seats have been made available for £22.50 and can be purchased by phoning 0844 847 9910 (£2.75 transaction fee) or by visiting one of our Southbank Centre Ticket offices in person (no transaction fee). Please note that these seats offer a slightly restricted view of the stage. Book fast as there is a limited number of seats available.
Antony has said of Almond, 'Marc laid out a trail of subcultural breadcrumbs and aesthetic tenets that, more than any other single influence, formed the artist that I would become. Ten years before I would hear Nina Simone make a similar affirmation, I read Marc saying that he didn't care if he hit the notes, for it was only the feeling that mattered.'
Also, critically, it was on Marc and the Mambas' first album that Antony first heard a cover of Lou Reed's masterpiece 'Caroline Says', which 20 years later Antony would personally accompany Reed himself in reprising.
